Свидание band
Still from the video for «Нежнее нежного»

You may know the word Свидание even when hardly knowing any Russian. It means meeting or date (see Reverso), so upon asking YouTube for Свидание videos, it will present you a lot of vlogger people’s первое свидание (first date) reviews and experiences. All very well, but you might miss things far more interesting. Get ready for a date, possibly your first, with Свидание.

Moscow music

The band hails from Moscow, not just the political heart of Russia but also a bustling hub for its underground music scene. Свидание (or Svidaniye) brings influences like shoegaze, post-punk and plain pop to the soft and dreamy side of the spectrum. Think lush soundscapes with a cinematic feel, and an undercurrent of nostalgia.

Sounds not too bad, huh! Here are three options (from new to old) to get further acquainted – don’t be surprised if this turns out to be случайная любовь (accidental love)

Нежнее нежного (2021)

Based on the poem of the same name by Osip Mandelstam (Осип Мандельштам) from 1909. Text with analysis here, text with translation here. The piece of poetry also set to music by Лариса Герштейн.

Video Roman Liberov & Red Pepper Film, directed by Egor Myasnikov, with Irina Nosova.

Музыка глаз (2020)

Title track from the album that addresses the Almighty on its cover, or does it speak to fellow sinners really. Text here, text with translation here. Review: меланхолия для романтиков (melancholy for romantics).

Video written and directed by Иван Карасев and Эмилия Климова.

Случайная любовь (2017)

Happens to the best of us. But Случайная любовь случайно навсегда: accidental love is accidental forever. From album Nº2; text here, text with translation here.
