A strong sense of nostalgia runs deep in the music of Перемотка (Peremotka). And even if you’ve never heard their songs before, there is something strangely familiar about them. Meet the Yekaterinburg post-punk band that can take you anywhere – including times and places you have never been.
From Yekaterinburg
Перемотка is firmly rooted in Yekaterinburg, where the band formed in 2015. Its origins go back even further: the members have known each other since their school days. They played covers at квартирники (house concerts) and small venues before writing their own songs, gradually developing the sound that would become their trademark: a blend of post-punk and new wave with elements of synth-pop. Their first album, Ночь эпохи (Night of the Era), followed in 2017. The song Как тебя покорить? (How to Win You Over?) from 2020 helped propel them to wider popularity, with TikTok playing a part.
A cinematic rewind
Перемотка means “rewind”, which takes us straight to the era of videotape – and to the 2008 movie Be Kind Rewind, starring Jack Black and Yasiin Bey. After accidentally erasing a video store’s tapes, the protagonists recreate the movies themselves.
In a similar manner, Перемотка take elements from different musical genres and remake them into something of their own. The band has itself linked its name and eclectic style to the movie, explaining the connection in this interview. Перемотка also seems an apt name for a band dealing in flashbacks and memories – real or imagined.

Над домами (Above the Houses) (2026)
Start with the very latest – and a rather special song. Перемотка’s contribution to a new compilation album paying tribute to the acclaimed poet Boris Ryzhy (1974-2001) has been chosen as its title track. (Read more in this article on Kommersant.) The album also feautures contributions from Слава КПСС, Сова, Антоха МС and others. The song sets Ryzhy’s poem «Над домами» to music.
